Frequently Asked Questions
Do you require a retainer or upfront deposit?
Yes — but our retainers work differently than the traditional model. Rather than holding an open-ended retainer on file and issuing separate bills on top of it, we tie the retainer directly to a good-faith estimate of the total matter.
At the outset of an engagement, we provide a projected fee range based on the scope of work. The opening retainer is set at a portion of that range, and fees are billed against it as work is performed. If additional funds are needed to complete the matter, we issue a replenishment invoice rather than running a parallel bill. This approach gives you a clear sense of total cost upfront, eliminates billing surprises, and ensures the retainer functions as a working budget — not an open-ended deposit.
How are hourly rates determined?
Our hourly rates range from $300 to $550, depending on the seniority of the attorney handling the work and the complexity of the matter. Before any hourly engagement begins, we provide a good-faith estimate of the time required so you can plan with confidence.
When do you offer flat-rate pricing instead of hourly billing?
We offer flat-rate pricing whenever the scope of work can be reasonably estimated upfront. Standalone contract drafting and contract review are well-suited to flat rates, as are formation packages and most discrete filings. Matters that involve ongoing negotiation, redlining, or back-and-forth with opposing counsel are more difficult to scope as a true flat rate. For those engagements, we typically provide a quoted range and commence work with a deposit toward a good-faith estimate of the total matter.
You can request a flat-rate quote by contacting us directly or by using our pricing index for a preliminary estimate. The pricing index currently produces an estimate rather than a binding quote, but we are actively working toward delivering fixed-rate pricing directly through the site in the near future.
Do you ever take cases on contingency?
On a case-by-case basis, yes. Contingency arrangements are typically reserved for specific commercial litigation and dispute matters where the economics align for both client and firm. We’ll discuss eligibility during your initial consultation.
What does an incorporation package include, and what does it cost?
Our standard incorporation and corporate governance packages start at $1,000 and typically include entity formation filings, an operating agreement or bylaws, organizational consents, and an EIN. Add-ons such as multi-member operating agreements, founder vesting documents, shareholder agreements, or 83(b) elections are quoted separately.
How much does trademark registration cost?
Trademark registration begins at $1,000 in legal fees, with USPTO filing fees passed through at cost. The flat fee covers a knockout search, application drafting, and USPTO filing. Substantive office actions are quoted separately.
How much does a copyright filing cost?
Copyright filings start at $250 in legal fees, plus the U.S. Copyright Office filing fee at cost. This covers single-work registrations; group registrations and complex deposit material are quoted on request.
Are filing fees and government costs included in your quotes?
No — third-party costs (USPTO fees, state filing fees, Copyright Office fees, county recording fees, etc.) are always passed through at cost and disclosed before they are incurred. You will never be marked up on a government fee.
What payment options are available?
We accept ACH, wire, and major credit cards, and can structure milestone-based payment plans for larger transactional matters.
Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Yes. We offer a complimentary initial consultation for prospective clients to discuss the matter, assess fit, and outline a proposed fee structure before any retainer is collected. Consultations are typically 30 minutes and can be scheduled by phone, video, or in-person where available. There is no obligation to engage the firm following the consultation, and any preliminary scope or pricing discussion is provided at no cost.
